HED KANDI @ SHARM EL SHEIKH, EGYPT

...

by Jack McCord

Salaam ! Back to everybody's favourite outdoor Sinai nightclub last Saturday... Pacha, Sharm El-Sheikh. This gig was one of the highlights of my summer last year and they're still raving about their Kandi New Year's Eve party so I was expecting great things even if it was low-season tourist wise. Apparently this was the coldest March in 150 years but in spite of this and a few...

Tom De Neef

 Tom De Neef

 Hed Kandi DJ

Biography:DJ/producer and label owner Tom de Neef obviously likes his music to do the talking. Refusing to be pigeonholed by people’s perception of any one persona, he has relentlessly reinvented himself through a myriad of production monikers, including Plastika, TDN, Behemoth, Villanord, Gattaca, and the Bazement Freakz (with Eddie Amador) and that’s the music that he produces at his studio in Antwerp, Belgium. AS for his talent and passion for DJing, he can be heard spinning Hed Kandi events, and at Roger Sanchez’s Stealth parties.  He started with Hed Kandi in 2001 and played for them at the hottest clubs and festivals around the world.  He also did a mix compilation for HK (World Series 2006) and some cool remixes (Brand New Heavies, Stonebridge). However, despite such club-thumping achievements, some – including Roger Sanchez – still think that he is ‘underrated’.

Release-wise… he’s produced two huge club monsters: Disco Mirror (on Additive/Positiva) in 1997 and Disco Dancing (FFRR/London Records) in ‘98.  With remixes for artists such as Kylie Minogue (Can't Get You Out of My Head), Roger Sanchez (Another Chance), Kings of Tomorrow (Finally), and Jon Cutler (It’s Yours) in the bag, he also created Answer as Plastika, which was played heavily by Pete Tong on his Radio 1 Essential Selection show; while a foray into tech house under the name Villanord called Futurescope won support from Laurent Garnier and Jack de Marseille.  His tech-tinged workouts as Behemoth found favour with the likes of X-Press 2 and D’Julz. Tom’s released his tracks on illustrious labels such as Stealth, Fluential, Defected, ID&T., Eye Industries and Phonetic.
